EU recognition of adequacy of personal data protection in the Faroe Islands

The European Commission has recognized the Faroe Islands as providing adequate protection of personal data in accordance with Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.

On the 15 of January 2024 The European Commission released a report detailing the outcomes of the first review of adequacy decisions pursuant to Article 25(6) of the Data Protection Directive. The Commission found that eleven countries or territories, including the Faroe Islands, demonstrate an adequate level of protection for personal data when transferred from the European Union.
